Originally a Frenchman gentleman named Charles St. Amand bought property on the island in 1893, but since his name was mispelled on the deed, the island got its current name. Famous circus operator, John Ringling acquired the entire St Armands Key island in 1917 before there was any bridge connecting St Armands Key to the Sarasota mainland.
Ringling's workers developed the island from then until 1925 when work began on a causeway to connect St Armands Key to downtown Sarasota.
St Armands Key is primarily known for its high-fashion boutiques, casual and outdoor dining establishments, and upscale art galleries in the area known as St Armands Circle, basically a large roundabout with a small park in the middle. Within the park,
Ringling Circus heritage is honored with iron plaques around the walkways and portraying various famous circus characters.
St Armands is also home to upscale homes and condominiums. The neighborhood is conveniently located such that Lido Key, Longboat Key and downtown Sarasota are all within easy reach by bike or by auto.
Residents can easily walk to the beaches of Lido Key.
But it's the shopping, the wonderful food and the atmosphere that makes St Armands Key so special. Art,
boutiques, and fabulous pedestrian-friendly restaurants are all here. Residents and visitors alike spend hours wandering around St Armands Circle's shops and boutiques, or relaxing at one of several outdoor cafes doing a little people-watching.
Around you as you stroll or relax, palm trees, tropical plantings and flowering shrubbery undulate in the warm winds off the Gulf of Mexico just across the bridge to Lido Key.
